Project

For my birthday last month I received a check from my parents. I immediately went to Bella Rosa Antiques to get something I had been eyeing for months.
As I get them sorted in order and such, I will start to post about these letters from WWII.

A Day That Will Live In Infamy

A day late but the feeling is still the same. Sorry for the lack of posts. WE left for Florida on the 21st to spend Thanksgiving with my dad and stepmother, and didn't get home until the 30th. Now my mom and step dad are here! It's been a whirlwind! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

It's been awhile

*sigh* I wish I could post more often. It's me. It sometimes seems like I have nothing to say! lol! I have been SO tired this weekend and I was not feeling well last night. So I called in sick from the bookstore. My allergies are running rampant and my back is killing me for some reason. I keep waking up in the middle of the night with an achey back.

Now I feel like I am whining!

On a happier note, we  broke down a bought a new car. A Toyota Corolla. She is a dark grey with a lighter grey interior. We name all of our cars. I really like Carmen Corolla, but it seems like she should be red with that name! lol!

Happy Sunday my friends!

Memorial Day

July 19,1983-October 7, 2005

Memorial Day 2013

In October of 2012 I was blessed to take a vacation to Hawaii with a close friend of mine. She suggested I take a day tour of Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu since I am such a history buff.

The photo above is one I took while visiting the USS Arizona in Oahu. Legend has it that many who take photos of the oil that continues to leak will see faces of those who died tragically in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Our tour guide also said that according to legend the oil will continue to leak until all who survived are returned.

Please remember those men and women who have served in all wars, all military units, in peacetime and wartime, those who returned, those who did not.

The Girls of Atomic City

Yesterday I had a shift at the bookstore. One my way in I passed one of the table and a book caught my eye. I grabbed it, got my stuff together and I started my shift in music.

Now music can be notoriously slow. So I flipped through the book and proceeded to read the dust jacket. The I started reading......

Granted, I am not that far into the book but it is already a fascinating read. Imagine taking a job at during the war. Not knowing where you were going or what you were going to do, just that you would be away from home and doing a job that would help the war effort.

Denise Kiernan has a great interactive website about her book and these amazing young women.

I usually don't buy a lot of hard cover books without reading a bit if it first. Something about this book spoke to me. Go check it out!

Don't Bother to Knock

I love old movies. Vintage anything really. I can't quite remember what started it all other than I used to check out vintage books from the library on manners, health, etc. Mostly from the 50's. What I wouldn't give to go back to Allen County Library (Ft Wayne, Indiana) and get all the titles. But I digress.

I always adored Vincent Price and Doris Day movies. I'm not a fan of musicals. I love really, really bad B-horror movies. One of the perks of working at a book store part time is, beside an opposite of the dry day job of a gig with an insurance company (I do love it, but no vintage!), I get deals.

This past week I purchased some great movies. "Don't Bother to Knock" is an awesome Marilyn Monroe movie. It's a thriller from 1952 with Marilyn, Richard Widmark, and Anne Bancroft to name a few. It's one of my favorite Marilyn movies along with "Niagra", "How to Marry a Millionaire", and her roll in "All About Eve".

I also scored "Tingler" with Vincent Price, both versions of "Imitation of Life" (Claudette Colbert edition and Lana Turner edition) and another double movie pack with "Portrait in Black" and "Madame X".

In addition I was able to record:

Now I just need to find it on DVD!

Miss Subway New York

Bunny over at Bunny's Victory is hosting a give away for this delightful book:  Meet Miss Subways.

Can you imagine having your photo all over New York subways? I wonder if they had issues with people bothering them. I fear that would be an issue today! I'm not sure I would have been brave enough, lol! Too bad this ended in 1976. We visited NYC in 1978 or so and I probably would have been enamored with these signs!

This is a fascinating piece of history. Please visit Bunny and read more about the book and giveaway!

Bletchley Circle

I watched this today. I love it already! But one of the homes in the show looks just like the house used in 1940's House. I didn't realize it wasn't a brand new show. New to me!!!
In this particular episode, there is a girl in a photograph that looks like Fleur from Diary of a Vintage Girl. So much so I had to rewind.

So I am dipping my toe back into vintage. I am going to try and work more vintage into my wardrobe. I may even set my hair in rollers tonight.  I am so used to washing my hair every day. How do you gals handle the "feeling" of dirty hair?

Another question, what do you keep in your vintage handbags?

XO
Kim
